the problem.

Summer is a joyful escape from #STACKINGSEASON, eight months where Black Zillennials grind, hustle, and grow in every aspect while staying low-key. However, there has been a “Grinch” stealing summer’s joys - isolation (pandemic), turmoil (police brutality), or activism (civic duty).

the insight.

Outdoor adventures have historically excluded Black explorers, however, Black Zillennials have taken the lead on embracing their identities and interests, and are shifting the narrative.

the idea.

We partnered with groundbreaking adventurers in the outdoor activity space to sponsor their next great expeditions, uplifting the ways the Black community is progressing in being adventurous. As they embarked on these quests, they captured their journeys from start to finish, sharing all the hacks they used to make their unique interests possible.

Adventure Series

This summer, to celebrate and supercharge the unique power of Black joy, Walmart sought to provide an all-access pass to summer through liberating content and experiences that help Black Zennials truly seize every moment of the season.

EPISODE 1: HUNTER REDISCOVERS LEO CARILLO

Pro surfer Hunter explored new aspects of his favorite hometown beach during a rare Malibu surf swell. He assessed surf conditions, analyzed wind speeds on a nearby trail, snorkeled to examine wave bodies, and climbed caves to observe wave breaks. Finally, Hunter found the perfect moment to paddle out and catch the best wave.

EPISODE 2: N’DEA’S ST. HELENA SOLO TRIP

Over 48 hours on St. Helena Island, we challenged N’Dea to uncover local adventure and authentic culture. She explored Gullah cuisine, picked fresh produce, and practiced traditional recipes. She toured the waters by boat, board, and horseback, culminating in a private biplane flying lesson. This blend of outdoor activities and cultural excursions created a unique solo travel experience, showcasing that Black travelers can and should pursue whatever excites them.
